Kids Being Funny

Whether they want to be or not.

If I had to choose one funniest tale that I’ve heard from a child over the years, I cannot begin to figure out which one I would pick. So I decided to write them down here when I hear or remember one.

Story #1

The last time I saw two of our grandsons, the youngest, Eli, had an announcement. You see, he’s 5 years old and starting Kindergarten this year, but he still sneaks into his parents’ bed every night. I believe it’s habit as much as anything, but they can’t seem to break him from it. His older brother sleeps in the same room with him & they have a nightlight, but Eli is still “afraid.”

Last visit, Eli suddenly announced to Paw and me that. “I slept in my lab all night by myself.” Now, we’re still not sure what his “lab” is, but we were delighted to hear that he spent the night in his room. It was a very short-lived delight, however.

Both parents emitted sounds that were not quite moans and not quite screeches of disbelief. Almost a unison, “Whhhaaaaaaaa?!?!” My son said, “Then who was that in our bed last night?”

Never at a loss for an answer, Eli said, “That was Robot Eli.”

He is the same kid who, when he was about 3 1/2, talked about what he did when he was a grown up. He talked about things that were definitely outside his own experience, but with such conviction that he was utterly believable. Man, I hope this kid becomes a writer.
